The gatetowers idea came after a visit to the Rochelle Railroad park where they have an elevated train viewing area.  I thought the idea was great so i pushed the idea and Lee Stocking raised the funds and Widmer's gang helped construct them. They are standing in near proximity of the original gatetowers that once gaurded the railroad xings.
We hope to get the stairs up someday soon. The photo opportunities from inside the tower are wonderful.
There seems to be a little paranoia about the steps being put up. Some think it might be hazardous. Everything involves taking risks even crossing the street or getting into the combine car.  Safety first and being careful is something we all must practice.  We railfans would love to see the steps get put up so we can preserve railroad history from a wonderful view!

The south gate tower will eventually get stairs
